We returned on Wednesday from our Summer Camp to Lost Canyon. It was my first time taking on the role as Program Director and a Lead Character. The job was extremely tiring, but now that I am on the other side, I realized how much it energized me and made me truly love what I do. Here are a couple things I learned:
-You can still minister to students when you aren't staying in their cabin. It just is a different ministry. From stage I was able to use humor to break down barriers and give cabin leaders something to talk about. Also, through games and cheesy taglines, students let go of their "coolness" for a while and allow you to enter their world.
-A good finale to your program is worth the late-night work. We ended our week with a medley of Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Bohemian Rhapsody...a brilliant combination that made for some good laughs (and skinned knees).
-The time you put into a video usually comes back ten-fold at camp. The couple hours I used to create a Behind the Music for our program characters really brought some flavor and backstory to us on stage. Using students in the video was one of the best things I could have done.
-Thanking your team and reminding them of how great they are is necessary. No one likes a leader that takes all the credit!
-Lastly, getting sleep at camp is overrated. Get to know the people around you, make friends with the camp staff, buy your team some ice cream, be the last one to sleep and the first to wake up, appreciate what you have while you are there...not when you get home!
Be safe and hot coffee.
