The other night Kim and I babysat for a family with 4 kids. The youngest, weighing in at about 7 years old, challenged me to a rousing game of backgammon. What you must know is that I have never indulged in said game and required a short instruction period before the slaughter could commence. So he began to list off rules like, “you begin over there and try to get here.” “Then if you do this, you are out, and if I do this you are out.” “When you are out you have to do this.” As you can guess, none of this ever made sense. As the game went on, every time I removed one of his pieces, a new “rule” was created and my move was annulled. I believe it is important for all of us to be a good loser to a 7-year old even when the rules seem to fall out of the sky unexpectantly, kind of like bird poop.
